Stump grinding in Pakenham & Cardinia Shire.

Stump ground 100–500mm below grade depending on what you’re doing with the space. Narrow-access 30cm grinder fits through a 900mm side gate. Lateral roots followed for paving, slab and pool work. Chips removed or left as mulch — your call.

How deep to grind — depends on what comes next.

  • Re-turfing or garden bed: 100–150mm below grade. Lateral roots left to rot in place over 5–10 years (which is fine).
  • Mulch or new shrub planting: 150–200mm. New root system establishes above the rotting root plate.
  • Paving (pavers, brick paths, decorative concrete): 300mm+ below grade, plus lateral roots chased 1m radius. Otherwise rot voids crack the pavers within 5–7 years.
  • Concrete slab (shed pad, extension): 400–500mm + lateral roots 1.5m radius. Anything less risks settlement.
  • Pool surround or pool footing: 500mm + lateral roots 2m radius. Engineer’s call if it’s within the pool excavation zone.
  • Building footing: Full root plate removal — typically requires excavation rather than grinding. We’ll tell you if that’s the case.

Two grinders, every job.

  • 30cm narrow-access self-propelled grinder. Fits through a 900mm gate. Used for most backyard stumps. Petrol, 26HP.
  • 76cm tow-behind hydraulic grinder. For paddock stumps, large gum stumps over 80cm diameter, and land-clearing jobs. 70HP diesel, tracked.

Before we grind.

Dial Before You Dig (DBYD) lookup for any stump within 5m of a service entry — gas, water, NBN, electrical, sewer. Services marked with paint or flags. We’ll pause and reassess if we hit anything that doesn’t feel like root — old galvanised water mains and orange-conduit NBN are the usual surprises in older Cardinia Shire properties.
