Dead, dangerous and pest-host trees can usually be removed without a permit under the standard exemptions (10/30 rule near dwellings, hazardous-tree assessment). What is AS 4373 pruning and why does it matter?

AS 4373-2007 is the Australian Standard for pruning of amenity trees — it's what a Cert IV arborist follows when removing a branch correctly. Cuts are made just outside the branch collar (not flush with the trunk, not leaving a stub) so the tree can compartmentalise the wound and seal it. No more than 25% of the live canopy is removed in a single growth season. Branches over 50mm are three-cut undercut to prevent bark tearing. The opposite of AS 4373 is 'topping' or 'lopping' — flat-cutting the head off a tree — which gardeners with chainsaws still do, and which destroys the tree's structural integrity, kills it slowly, and creates dangerous epicormic regrowth that drops limbs in storms 5–10 years later. We never top healthy trees.

The tree also routes most of its photosynthesis into new shoots instead of root-defence, so decay enters at the cut and the trunk hollows over the next decade. We see the consequences every week on storm callouts: trees that were 'lopped' to be safer are exactly the ones that fall. A Cert IV arborist will either prune properly to AS 4373 or recommend removal if the tree's structure is already compromised. Lopping is the worst of both worlds.

Do you grind stumps below grade so I can replant or pave over them?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Standard stump grind is 100–150mm below grade, which is enough for re-turfing, garden beds and most landscaping. For pavers, concrete slabs, footings or pool work we grind 300mm+ below, and we follow the major lateral roots out 1–2m and grind those too — otherwise the root mass rots over 5–10 years and creates voids that crack pavers. We bring two grinders: a 30cm narrow-access grinder that fits through a 900mm gate, and a 76cm tow-behind for big paddock stumps. Cleanup includes removing the grindings or backfilling with topsoil at your choice.

Our climbers hold Cert IV in Arboriculture (minimum), Working at Heights, EWP licences and chainsaw cross-cut and tree-felling tickets. Every job has a documented Job Safety Analysis and exclusion zone before the first cut. Insurance certificates and qualifications are provided on request — and you should ask any tree contractor for them before they bring a chainsaw onto your block. The cheap cash-job operators on Facebook Marketplace usually have neither, and if one of them puts a tree through your neighbour's roof, it's your problem.
