Why a Cardinia arborist (not a bloke with a chainsaw)

Three things every Cardinia tree job has to get right.

The council mapping check.

Cardinia Shire has a Significant Tree Register, plus Vegetation Protection Overlays (VPO), Environmental Significance Overlays (ESO) and Bushfire Management Overlays scattered across the shire. Cut a protected tree without a planning permit and the fines start at $9,000 — sometimes much more if the tree is on the register. Most weekend operators don’t check. We check the council mapping at the quote stage and tell you the moment we see anything restrictive. Where a permit is needed we lodge it for you.

The structural assessment, before the climb.

Before any cuts go in on a mature gum, we walk the tree and look for codominant stems with bark inclusions, included branches, fungal brackets, basal cavities, recent cracking, lean change since last storm. Half the trees that fail in spring storms had visible defects six months earlier. A 15-minute structural assessment up front is the difference between “we pruned it” and “we removed it before it removed the shed”. We tell you what we see honestly — we don’t recommend removal when a target-prune will do, and we don’t prune when the tree is past saving.

The cut that lets the tree heal — not rot.

A correct AS 4373 pruning cut sits just outside the branch collar (the slight bulge where the branch meets the trunk). It leaves the collar intact so the tree can compartmentalise the wound and seal it. A flush cut tears into the trunk and lets decay straight in. A stub cut leaves a dead spike that rots back into the trunk over 5–10 years. The “topping” cut — flat across the top of the tree — is the worst of all: it destroys the tree, creates dangerous epicormic regrowth, and is exactly what you’ll see being called “tree pruning” on Facebook Marketplace. We never top healthy trees.
